Introduction to Qilu Hospital of Shandong University

Qilu Hospital of Shandong University (QLH), a comprehensive class A tertiary hospital, operates under the National Health Commission's (NHC) guidance. In the 2022 Performance Appraisal of National Tertiary Public Hospitals, Qilu Hospital ranked 5th in the country, leading in the A++ league. Notably, its Case Mix Index (CMI), which reflects the technical complexity of treated cases and the hospital’s capacity to handle severe and challenging conditions, ranked 3rd in the country.

 
Tracing its roots back to 1890, the institution has evolved through various identities including Sino-US Hospital, Union Hospital, Cheeloo Hospital, and Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Medical University, before adopting its current name in October 2000. Over a century, QLH has upheld the spirit of "Healing the people, pursuing the truth of science" and has lived by the motto of “Practicing medicine with utmost morality and professionalism”. Due to this commitment, Qilu Hospital has developed from a small clinic into a large-scale hospital that now boasts 4360 beds and serves the health needs of hundreds of millions of people. Currently, QLH incorporates 61 clinical departments and medical technology departments, along with 28 national key disciplines and national clinical key specialties. In 2023, it handled a total of 3.1557 million outpatient visits, discharged 212.7 thousand patients, and conducted 175.4 thousand surgeries.
 
In recent years, QLH has committed to establishing a strong foundation in Shandong province, serving the nation, and looking towards the global stage. It has dedicated its efforts to building a Comprehensive National Medical Center, a National Clinical Medicine Research Center, and a National Regional Medical Center, with an aim to become a domestically and internationally recognized research-oriented hospital. The Emergency Medicine Complex, an integral part of this vision, became operational in May, 2023. Spanning 187,000 m², it features four specialized zones respectively for emergency and critical care, education and training, clinical application research, and interdisciplinary innovation, bolstered by an integrated air-ground 5G+ rescue system, adaptable for wartime field hospital use. This complex represents a nationwide benchmark in the seamless integration of clinical services, education, research, prevention, and management.
 
The hospital is dedicated to developing a holistic end-to-end public service platform for scientific and technological innovation, encompassing basic research, clinical research and achievements transformation. It currently boasts 37 research platforms and institutions at the national, ministerial, and provincial level. Remarkable approvals in 2023 include the National Key Laboratory for Innovation and Transformation of Luobing Theory, the National Innovation Platform for Achieving Breakthroughs and Industry-Education Integration in Medicine,the first Magnetic Field-free Medicine Research Platform at the provincial level in China, and Shandong International Cooperative Laboratory for Emergency and Critical Care Medicine.
 
As the First Clinical College of Shandong University, Qilu Hospital has developed a high-quality education and teaching system. In the fifth round of the national discipline evaluation, its Clinical Medicine was rated as a Class A discipline, and the quality of clinical practice education was ranked 12th among all university-affiliated hospitals nationwide. Qilu Hospital undertakes the teaching responsibilities for Clinical Medicine at Shandong University, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral levels. QLH has pioneered standardized residency training in China and, with an advanced clinical skills training center, has established a comprehensive training system that annually benefits 36,000 individuals.
