Dr. Hou is the Vice Chairman of the Diabetes Branch of Shandong Medical Association; member of the Microvascular Disease Group of the Chinese Diabetes Society; review expert of the National Natural Science Foundation; review expert of science and technology projects of the National Health and Family Planning Commission; and he is also the editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, CMJ, JDR, Zhonghua Reviewer of Diabetes Journal, Journal of Shandong University and Shandong Medicine.
 
Dr. Hou is dedicated to the clinical prevention and research of diabetes, complications and obesity, he is good at diagnosis and treatment of intractable diseases in endocrinology, and has won 4 hospital rescue awards for difficult and critical cases. He proposed the hypothesis of hyperglycemia pre-adaptation mechanism for the first time in the world, and invented the diabetic diet calculator and the differential diagnosis scale for benign and malignant thyroid nodules. He had a short-term training in the Diabetes Center of Oxford University, UK. Undertook 5 scientific research projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, won 5 provincial and ministerial scientific research achievement awards; won 2 patents; wrote 1 monograph on diabetes, associate editor and co-editor of 8 monographs, published more than 70 academic papers, Among them, 24 SCI articles.
