Introduction
Otorhinolaryngology is one of the key departments of our hospital. Each year the department has over 6000 hospitalized patients and over 100, 000 outpatients, more than 5000 surgeries. It provides medical treatment of all kinds of otorhinolaryngological diseases, including malignant and benign tumors of the head and neck, ear surgery, audiology, rhinology, sinus and allergy disorders, snoring and sleeping disorders, as well as related research.
History
Founded in 1924 by Professor Sun hongquan, Qilu Hospital Department of Otorhinolaryngology has been delivering expert patient care and research innovation for almost a century. Since the 1950s, the department is famous for inner ear fenestration, skull base surgery, facial nerve decompression, artificial larynx, esophageal pronunciation after total laryngectomy, head and neck tumor surgery, and laryngeal function reconstruction.
Medical staff
There is a medical staff of 108, including 34 physicians, 14 lab staff, 55 nurses, and 5 technicians. Among the physicians, 16 are professors or associated professors. Thirty-two of them are also Ph.D., more than 85 percent have master’s degrees. Our surgeons and physicians are at the leading edge of otorhinolaryngological diseases treatment in the nation.
Environment and Medical Equipment
The otorhinolaryngology department consists of an outpatient clinic, two wards (F13C and F13D) with 110 beds, and a laboratory (NHC Key Laboratory of Otorhinolaryngology). A variety of medical equipment and techniques are used, such as carbon dioxide laser, nerve monitors, ultrasonic scalpel, nasal endoscope, otoscope, microscopes. With the modern equipment, the otorhinolaryngology department can scientifically and accurately detect and treat a variety of otorhinolaryngological diseases.
Specialty Areas
Head and Neck Surgery: The department is at the leading edge of head and neck cancer treatment since the 1950s. Patients will benefit from the skilled care of head and neck surgeons, guiding clinical advancements in the field of head and neck cancer care. We specialize in surgery for malignant and benign tumors of the head and neck, focusing on hypopharyngeal and laryngeal cancers, including resection of hypopharyngeal carcinoma via paraglottic space, trans-oral endoscopic removal and other minimally invasive approaches, thyroid cancers and oropharyngeal cancers.
Ear Surgery & Audiology: The department offers a comprehensive approach to cochlear implantation, and builds up the listening rehabilitation center, bringing meaningful sound to the lives of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. The middle ear reconstruction relieves the patients from hearing loss after mastoid surgery. We also treat nerve deafness through a combination of medicine and hyperbaric oxygenation.
Rhinology: The department is one of the first centers to carry out nasal endoscopic surgery in the province. Nasal surgeries include septoplasty, turbinate reduction, nasal and sinus tumor or polyp removal. Recently, skull base and orbital surgery has undergone a revolution, with nasal endoscopy that is minimally invasive and more effective than ever before, including orbital trauma, orbital decompression, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, malignant and benign skull base tumors.
Sinus and Allergy Disorders: The department provides evaluation and management for patients of all ages with sinus and allergy disorders. Our doctors have a broad range of experience and expertise in diagnosing and managing general sinus cases as well as more complex sinus and allergy conditions.
Snoring and Sleeping Surgery: The department provides comprehensive surgical care for patients with obstructive sleep apnea or snoring. Besides nasal surgeries, our surgical providers offer procedures such as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, tonsillectomy, hyoid myotomy and suspension, tongue suspension suture. We also build up the obstructive sleep apnea disorder research center in 1995, which is one of the first sleep research centers in the nation.
