Emergency Medicine

As one of the first emergency departments established in China, the Department of Emergency Medicine of Qilu Hospital is the National Key Clinical Specialty, NHC Emergency Treatment Platform for Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, the first batch of NHC Emergency Medicine Standardized Training Base for Resident Doctors, the Discipline Construction of the National Enhancement Project of Diagnosis and Treatment of Complicated Diseases Capability, the President's Unit of the Ninth Committee of the Chinese Society of Emergency Medicine, the Scholar Project Construction Unit of the “Taishan Scholar Climbing Project ”, the Shandong Provincial Key Discipline of Medicine and Health, and the President’s Unit of the Society of Emergency Medicine of Shandong Provincial Medical Association, etc. Under the leadership of the president of the national association and the scholar of the “Taishan Scholar Climbing Project”, and integrating top-notch youth talents of “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”, young experts of “Taishan Scholar” and other cores of the middle-aged and the young, the discipline has become a front-runner with enormous potentiality in the country. In 2020, Department of Emergency Medicine of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University ranked third in China’s Best Hospitals and Best Specialties Rankings released by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University.

The department includes pre-hospital care, outpatient service, emergency room, observation room, emergency intensive care unit (EICU), emergency operation room, emergency radiation, emergency clinical laboratory, emergency ultrasound, Chest Pain Center, emergency medical ward, emergency surgical ward, Department of Poisoning and Occupational Diseases, neurological intensive care unit (NICU), Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Research Institute of Shandong University, and Key Laboratory of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine of Shandong Provincial Health System. The emergency outpatient service includes independent clinics for adult specialties, such as internal medicine, surgery, cardiology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, stomatology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and dermatology. The department has more than 110 authorized physicians and surgeons and over 350 nursing staff. At present the department has 29 beds in emergency room, 68 in observation room, 42 in emergency medical ward, 57 in emergency surgical ward, 32 in EICU, and 28 in NICU. The department has been focusing on five key directions: acute cardiovascular diseases (mainly acute chest pain), cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation, critical illness, emergency trauma, and acute poisoning, and it actively sends cores of the middle-aged and the young to learn internationally leading and advanced knowledge and techniques in internationally renowned hospitals and laboratories, and encourages them to participate in international and domestic academic conferences. The department has formed a development path featuring five key directions and a close integration of clinical and basic research.

With an all-round development of medicine, education and research, the discipline established the first Chest Pain Center in China in 2002. It sticks to the principle of “early diagnosis, risk stratification, correct triage and scientific treatment”, and forms an integrated and seamless acute chest pain treatment process including pre-hospital care, in-hospital emergency care, and post-discharge follow-up. It initiated national academic alliances and organizations including the Chinese Emergency Medicine Alliance and China Chest Pain Alliance. It has established a complete scientific research platform, including Key Laboratory of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine of Shandong Provincial Health System, Key Laboratory of Cardiopulmonary-Cerebral Resuscitation Research of Shandong Colleges and Universities, and Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Research Institute of Shandong University. In 2018, it was among the first batch of institutions to be approved as the Shandong Provincial Clinical Medicine Research Center for Emergency and Critical Care Medicine with distinction. It undertakes over fifty national, ministerial, provincial and departmental projects, including 4 national key research and development plans, 1 special project of national science and technology basic resources survey, and 1 key project of National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has won more than 10 scientific prizes of ministerial and provincial level, including the first prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, and the first prize of Shandong Science and Technology Award. More than 400 papers have been published, among which over 140 were accepted by SCI journals such as EUR HEART J, J AM COLL CARDIOL, and JAMA Cardiol, and more than 20 inventions have been patented. Editors-in-chief or associate editors of 15 Chinese and English planning textbooks including Emergency Medicine are from the department.
