The Department of Hematology was established in 1959 as a national key clinical specialty, Shandong Hematological Clinical Medical Research Center, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Hematoimmunology, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Shandong Science and Technology Leading Talents Innovation Studio. Our department has been ranked as Top ten nationally by Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University for seven consecutive years. In 2019, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences ranked Department of Hematology in Qilu Hospital as 9th in hematology field, and Peking University also ranked it as 9th in the best Clinical Discipline Assessment in China.
The Department has a team of talents, such as 1 Yangtze river scholars distinguished professor, 2 Taishan Scholars distinguished professors,1 winner of National Outstanding Youth Fund, 1 Outstanding Talents of the Ministry of Education in the New Century, 4 second-level professors from Shandong University, 2 Outstanding Discipline Leaders of Shandong Health System, 1 young and middle-aged key scientific and technological talent in the health system of Shandong Province, 1 medical leading talent in Shandong Province, 1 leading science and technology talent in Shandong Province, 3 young experts from Taishan Scholars, and 7 supervisors for doctorate degree in Shandong University.
The department of hematology has a perfect and solid sub-specialty system, including thrombosis and hemostasis, leukemia, erythrocyte disease, lymphoma/myeloma, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and myelodysplastic syndrome etc. The medical services are comprehensive including inpatient wards, expert clinics, health care clinics, emergency clinics, hospital consultations, free consultation, and medical tasks for major social events. Hematology specialist clinic is located on the third floor of Huamei Building. The hematological laboratory is responsible for the bone marrow aspiration, cytology, blood coagulation serial examinations, and MICM typing of leukemia onwards, outpatients and open to other hospitals. All of the associated and/or full professors participate in the third-line duty. The outpatient visits are open during holidays.
In the last five years, department of hematology has undertaken more than 30 scientific research projects funded by provincial national scientific foundation or national foundations, with a total scientific research funding of nearly ¥30,000,000 and won first-class prizes twice and second-class prizes 6 times at the provincial and ministerial level. Our department has published more than 200 academic papers and trained more than 100 graduate students. Moreover, department of hematology has taken the lead in the development of more than 10 national multi-center prospective randomized controlled clinical trials, and the results has published in BLOOD (impact factor 16.562), the most authoritative journal in hematology, in which one of the manuscript was rated as one of the TOP 10 studies in 2017.
The scientific research directions of our department include primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and acute leukemia (AML). Department of Hematology is currently Asia’s largest and most renowned center for the research, diagnosis and treatment of ITP. Professor Ming Hou has chaired the committee that drafted four editions of the Chinese ITP guidelines. The team has revealed the role of immune tolerance in the pathogenesis of ITP, and has achieved a series of innovative findings publishing in "Blood, Heamatologica, Br J Haematol, J Clin Immunol, J Thromb Haemost, and the "Chinese Journal of Internal Medicine" and "Chinese Journal of Hematology" and other core journals, of which 15 papers were published in the international authoritative hematology journal "Blood". For the study of biological abnormality of leukemia, the Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Diagnosis and Treatment of Hematological Diseases, led by Professor Chunyan Ji, has developed an innovative system using genomics and big data analysis to predict primary drug-resistance molecular biomarkers in acute myeloid leukemia.
