Professor Hou Ming published important review in NEJM

On August 10, Prof. Hou Ming from the Department of Hematology, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University published an invited review entitled "Management of Primary Immune-Thrombocytopenia (ITP) in Pregnancy" in New England Journal of Medicine (CAS District 1, IF=158.5), one of the top international medical journals. Prof. Hou Ming is the independent corresponding author of this article, and Prof. James B Bussel from Weill Cornell Medical College and Prof. Douglas B Cines from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine are the first and third authors respectively. Qilu Hospital of Shandong University published the paper in NEJM as an independent correspondent affiliation.


Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is the leading cause of thrombocytopenia in early and mid-pregnancy, and the ability to recognize it early and manage it correctly is critical to protecting mothers and infants. This review focuses on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, maternal outcomes, risk assessment and treatment of ITP in pregnancy and the latest insights into neonatal thrombocytopenia, and analyzes the clinical practices of such disorders through the diagnostic and therapeutic process of a patient with ITP in pregnancy. This review is a landmark in the whole process management and treatment exploration of ITP in pregnancy combined.

Professor Hou Ming has been committed to the basic and clinical research of primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) for a long time, and has made a series of innovative achievements in the pathogenesis, specific diagnosis, risk management and targeted intervention strategies of ITP. Professor Hou Ming led the formulation of 8 consensus or guidelines of Chinese experts in the diagnosis and treatment of ITP. As the only invited expert from Chinese Mainland, he participated in the formulation of the International Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of ITP (version 2019).
